We'd like to say a huge thank you to everyone who visited the RICO Europe stand over the two-day event.
Winter Checklist for Plant and Agricultural Machinery
Winter weather puts serious stress on plant and agricultural machinery. Freezing temperatures, moisture, and idle time can lead to breakdowns, fuel issues, battery failures, and lost productivity.
A well-planned winter maintenance routine is the best defense. Here’s your go-to checklist to prepare your machines for the months ahead—and ensure they’re ready to perform when you need them most.
1. Clean Machines Thoroughly
Before anything else, give all machines a deep clean.
Why it matters: Dirt, crop residue, and mud trap moisture and promote corrosion.
- Remove debris from engine bays, chassis, and undercarriages
- Clean radiators and air inlets to prevent overheating
- Pressure-wash and dry fully before storage
2. Check and Replace Filters
Cold-start reliability hinges on clean filtration.
Why it matters: Dirty filters restrict airflow and fuel delivery, making cold starts harder and increasing wear.
- Inspect and replace fuel, oil, air, and hydraulic filters
- Use filters with proper cold-weather efficiency ratings
- Keep spare filters in the cab for emergencies
3. Inspect Fluids and Top Off
Fluids behave differently in cold weather.
Why it matters: Low-quality or aged fluids thicken, lose flow, or freeze—causing damage and inefficiency.
- Switch to winter-grade engine oil and hydraulic fluid
- Check coolant levels and antifreeze mix
- Inspect transmission and brake fluid
4. Add Fuel Stabiliser & Watch the Cloud Point
Fuel quality drops in winter—especially with biodiesel blends.
Why it matters: Gelled fuel and wax buildup can clog filters and stall engines.
- Add fuel stabiliser to prevent separation and breakdown
- Know your diesel’s cloud point—and adjust blends accordingly
- Use cold flow additives if required (but never overuse)
5. Test and Maintain Batteries
Cold reduces battery performance by up to 50%.
Why it matters: Weak batteries cause no-start conditions, especially in remote areas.
- Fully charge batteries before storage
- Clean terminals and check for corrosion
- Use a battery maintainer if stored for long periods
- Consider storing batteries indoors in freezing climates
6. Lubricate All Moving Parts
Don’t let frost seize up your machine.
Why it matters: Dry joints, pivot points, and linkages can rust, seize, or snap in sub-zero temps.
- Grease all grease points, joints, hinges, and moving parts
- Apply anti-seize where appropriate
- Use low-temp grease for exposed components
7. Inspect Tyres and Tracks
Rubber reacts to temperature—and pressure drops in the cold.
Why it matters: Poor traction and uneven wear reduce safety and efficiency.
- Check and adjust tyre pressure
- Inspect tyres and tracks for cuts, wear, and cracking
- Clean and inspect undercarriage on tracked machines
8. Protect Belts and Hoses
Rubber becomes brittle in cold weather.
Why it matters: Cracked or worn belts and hoses can fail without warning.
- Inspect for signs of wear, fraying, or dry rot
- Replace any suspect components before winter sets in
- Check tension and alignment
9. Store Properly or Cover Effectively
Reduce exposure to winter extremes.
Why it matters: Prolonged exposure to snow, ice, and moisture causes rust, electrical issues, and weather damage.
- Store machinery indoors if possible
- Use weatherproof, breathable covers for outdoor storage
- Disconnect batteries if stored outside
10. Inspect Implements and Attachments
Attachments need attention too.
Why it matters: Damaged blades, rusted components, or seized hydraulics can hold up work come spring.
- Clean, inspect, and lubricate all attachments
- Check cutting edges, snow blowers, sprayers, etc.
- Test hydraulics for leaks or weak operation
Bonus: Keep a Winter Emergency Kit
Don’t get stuck unprepared.
Include:
- Spare fuel filters
- Engine oil
- Jump leads or booster pack
- Tow strap
- Gloves and cold-weather gear
